“Keeping Houstonians safe is our first priority. I'm running for Mayor because we've got to face this challenge head-on. I won't rest until every neighborhood in Houston is one where we'd all feel safe raising a family or opening a business.” - Peter Brown
Peter Brown has worked hard on City Council to protect our neighborhoods and families with smart public safety investments. He was an initial advocate of the City’s recently-opened Real Time Crime Center, and has fought to equip law enforcement with the tools they need, including several new helicopters. “Get Tough, Get Smart,” his blueprint to cut crime in Houston calls for a tougher, smarter approach dedicated to reducing response times and decentralizing policing operations throughout the city, making substations fully-functional operational outposts. Brown will empower law enforcement with the tools they need to keep us safe. He’ll ensure local law enforcement agencies communicate and coordinate to expand our resources, maintain Houston’s investment in the Real Time Crime Center, and expand the use of new technologies to track and predict patterns of crime. And he’ll work to prevent crime before it happens with after-school programs, drug and alcohol prevention efforts, and other effective measures. With a serious commitment to cutting crime and building safer neighborhoods, we can ensure that Houston remains an attractive place to start a family or open a business.
A city of more than 620 square miles is too big to protect from one office downtown. Decentralized, neighborhood oriented policing will mean safer neighborhoods and a more effective use of our public safety resources. Too much of Houston's police force is behind a desk instead of on patrol, keeping us safe. Peter’s plan would get police officers out of downtown and into the community. Police officers will get to know our neighborhoods, and the neighborhoods will get to know their local officers, fostering relationships of trust, cooperation and accountability, whether you live in Kingwood or the Third Ward. And by bringing public safety resources closer to the neighborhoods where they are needed, we can cut crime and reduce response times. More »
Our city must make a bigger commitment to ensuring that our officers are using the latest technologies and best practices when it comes to fighting crime. We also have to ensure that the numerous law-enforcement jurisdictions in the area are able to communicate with each other. These efforts will save money and lives by making our policing more efficient and effective. More »
It’s not enough to be tough on crime, we’ve got to be smart about preventing it, with aggressive, proactive policies designed to deal with the causes of crime. We need to stop our kids from getting into gangs and drugs, make our neighborhoods stronger, safer, and more livable, and facilitate programs that work. More »
